The Transromanica route in Serbia is a part of the broader European cultural and tourist route, which comprises visits to the most important historical monuments in several Europian countries. This 7-day journey will show you the very best of the medieval era in Serbia. The itinerary includes visits to the spectacular Zica, Studenica, Gradac, Djurdjevi Stupovi and, Sopocani monasteries. You will also have the opportunity to explore the historic Sargan Eight train route and enjoy the traditional Serbian food.

Day 1 

Belgrade (D) approximately 50 km

Arrival in Belgrade. Meeting at the airport and transfer to the hotel. Welcome drink and a short rest. Follows panoramic and walking tour of Belgrade with a local guide, which includes sightseeing of the all main landmarks of Belgrade: Republic Square and Knez Mihailova Street, Belgrade’s main pedestrian zone, Terazije, The Parliament House and St. Sava Temple, St. Mark’s Church, etc. Then we take you to the Kalemegdan Fortress which was built by the Celts in the third century. Dinner in the oldest restaurant in Belgrade called “Question Mark”.

Day 2

Belgrade – Orasac – Oplenac – Kalenic Monastery – Ljubostinja Monastery – Vrnjacka Spa (BD) approximately 215 km

Breakfast at the hotel. Departure to the historical town Topola, which features picturesque landscapes with endless meadows and valleys. Located in the heart of Serbia, this is the place where the kings of the Karadjordjevic Dynasty were buried. Visiting Ljubostinja Monastery, which is dedicated to the Dormition of the Holy Virgin. Departure to the Kalenic Monastery, which was founded by Protovestiar Bogdan, his wife Milica, and his brother Peter. Departure to Vrnjacka Spa, the most popular Spa destination in Serbia. Dinner in the traditional local restaurant. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 3

Vrnjacka Spa – Žiča Monastery – Maglič fortress – Studenica Monastery (BD) approximately 95 km.

Breakfast at the hotel in Vrnjacka Spa. Journey to the Zica monastery, the principal endowment of King Stefan Prvovencani (1195-1223). Ths monastery was the seat of the Archbishop (1219–1253) and was by tradition the coronational church of the Serbian kings. Žiča Monastery was declared a Cultural Monument of Exceptional Importance in 1979 and was protected by the state. In 2008, Žiča Monastery celebrated 8 centuries of its’ existence. On our way to Studenica Monastery lies the medieval fortress Maglič, one of the best-preserved and most beautiful fortifications of medieval Serbia.

Monastery Studenica is dedicated to the Presentation of the Holy Virgin and is considered one of the greatest Serbian treasures which are home to the most valuable medieval frescos. You will enjoy a special monastic dinner and accommodation at Konaks of Studenica Monastery. Overnight.

Day 4 

Studenica Monastery – Gradac Monastery – St. Peter’s Church – Djurdjevi Stupovi Monastery- Novi Pazar (BL) approximately 140 km
Breakfast at the Studenica Monastery. Departure for Gradac Monastery, built by Jelena Anzujska, wife of the King Uros I. The monastery’s main church is dedicated to Blagovesti; it the most prominent and earliest example of Gothic architecture in Serbia. Lunch in the famous Ethno house Čakmara where you will enjoy traditional Serbian food. Departure to the Church of Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Ras, the former seat of bishops of Raska. Visit the ruins of the Djurdjevi Stupovi Monastery, built by the Great Zupan (ruler) Stefan. Arrival in Novi Pazar, a multicultural and multi-ethnic historical city. The predominant religion in the city is Islam although many historical monuments from both Islam and Orthodox Christianity can be found in the city, and in the whole region. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 5 

Novi Pazar – Sopocani Monastery – Mileševa Monastery – Sopotnica Waterfalls – Zlatibor (BD) approximately 230 km

Breakfast at the hotel in Novi Pazar. Then follows a visit to Sopocani Monastery, famous for its stunning frescoes. These exceptional paintings represent the work of the best artists of that period who were unable to work in the territory of the Byzantine Empire and found refuge at the Court of the Serbian king. On the outskirts of Stari Ras, the first capital of Serbia, there is an impressive group of medieval monuments consisting of fortresses, churches, and monasteries. The monastery at Sopoćani is a reminder of the contacts between Western civilization and the Byzantine world. The tour continues toward important cultural sights and natural beauties. First of them is the Monastery Mileseva, founded between 1234 and 1236 by the Serbian King Vladislav. The Mileseva Monastery is one of Serbia’s most important sanctuaries and spiritual centers. Follows a visit to beautiful Sopotnica Waterfalls. Sopotnica is well-known for its gorgeous crystal clear springs with ancient watermills. Follows a journey to the most famous Mountain Resort in Serbia – Zlatibor Mount, a scenic mountain with gentle valleys and hilly terrains. Dinner at a cozy local restaurant. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 6 

Zlatibor – Mećavnik – Belgrade (BL) approximately 295 km

Breakfast at the hotel. Departure for the famous Mokra Gora. We’ll take a ride on the famous Sargan Eight train, a figure-eight loop that winds through breathtaking mountain scenery. You will enjoy the splendor of the outdoors. Visit the Mecavnik Ethno village, where you will enjoy a delicious lunch. Departure to Belgrade, free time and preparing for a farewell dinner in Skadarlija, the old bohemian area of Belgrade. Traditional folklore dance, tambourine music, and delicious food. Overnight.

Day 7 

Belgrade (B) approximately 20 km

Breakfast. Transfer to the airport.
