Višegrad, Andrićgrad, Šargan, Mećavnik – 2-day tour

This two-day tour will take you to visit authentic Serbian villages, the famous bridge from the Ottoman era and the famous Orthodox monastery. Also, you’ll take a ride on the prettiest narrow gauge railway in Serbia, sail down the river Drina and, atop of it all – you’ll visit a very unusual cave. This is the best selling two-days tour in Serbia!

Activities:

  • Visiting Nikolje Monastery
  • Visiting Andrićgrad
  • Ride on Šargan Eight railway
  • Visiting Drvengrad
  • A boat ride on Drina River (optional)
  • Visiting the Potpeće Cave

Day 1

We will start from Novi Sad at 7 am, from the parking lot opposite Hotel Sajam; our passengers from Belgrade will join us at 8.30 am.

Our first stop will be in the picturesque Ovčar-Kablar gorge, where we will visit Nikolje monastery, the most beautiful among the 16 tiny monasteries to be found here.  Just a short drive away from the gorge is the village of Potpeće and above it, the imposing cave is best known for its huge entrance. We will enjoy our lunch in the Vodeničar restaurant directly beneath it.

Continuing our journey we will cross the border to enter Bosnia-Herzegovina; just a few minutes more and we reach the town of Višegrad and our hotel. After the check-in, we will visit Andrićgrad, a theme park dedicated to Ivo Andrić the famous writer and the only Serb who received a Noble prize. During the summer months, while the days are still long, we recommend that you take a short boat ride on the river Drina. Dinner at the hotel. Afterward, we’ll again visit Andrićgrad with its great selection of places to spend an evening, including a beer hall, wine tavern, a rakia bar, confectionery, etc.

Day 2

Breakfast at 7.30 AM. Optional visit to the Ivo Andrić Schoolroom where an interesting lecture about his life and work will be given.

Crossing back into Serbia, we’ll reach Mokra Gora village where we will step onboard the train that will take us on a narrow-gauge line known as the Šargan Eight. The name comes from the way the climb atop the hill of Šargan was mastered, full of twists, turns, 22 tunnels and, of course, great views.

After this memorable train ride, we’ll climb the hill of Mećavnik where the famed movie director Emir Kusturica has built the “Wooden Town”, or Drvengrad in Serbian. Free time for lunch.

During our journey towards Belgrade, we’ll take another break in the Ovčar Spa. We will reach Belgrade, and then Novi Sad, in late evening hours.

Note: in the case the train schedule changes, we will visit first Mećavnik and then go on the train ride. In that’s the case, we’ll have lunch at the restaurant in Mokra Gora train station or in one of the restaurants in Ovčar Banja.
