Serbia Geology Tour

 Book our multi-day Serbia Geology Tour with some of the best geologic wonders in Serbia. Visit some of the richest areas in this wonderful country. Decipher the geologic story behind the amazing scenery along the Danube, caves in central Serbia and mountaints on the West and more. Along the way, we stop frequently to enjoy  in breathtaking scenic nature that tell a remarkable story.

 

Day 1: Belgrade- Avala (B,L,D) approx. 30 km

Arrival at the train station, pick-up of the group. After refreshing and breakfast in a restaurant, sightseeing tour of the main sights of Belgrade follows: we shall have a relaxed walking tour in city center: Belgrade Kalemegdan fortress, originally built by Celts in the 3rd century BC. Gorgeous view from the lookout at the confluence of the Sava and Danube and Novi Beograd is an excellent place for photographing. A walk through the city centre shall take us to the Republic Square, Knez Mihailova Street – main pedestrian and shopping zone, Terazije, Parliament, Saint Mark’s Church etc. 

Lunch in one of the local restaurants. Panoramic sightseeing of the city (including Saint Sava Temple, the largest Orthodox Church), and departure to Avala monutain, situated 15 km from Belgrade and with its peak at 511 m above sea level is recommended for outings to all nature lovers. Dinner at the hotel restaurant and overnight in Belgrade.

 

Day 2: Kovin – Silver Lake – Golubac – Dobra – Lepenski Vir – Donji Milanovac (B,L,D) approx. 235 km

After breakfast, departure to Kovin city, and visiting of coal basin. Trip to Ram Fortress, situated on the northeastern side of the Danube river, that ranks among the oldest artillery strongholds in Serbia. We shall take a ferryboat across the Danube River. Today, the fortress is a symbol of Serbia’s rich culture and history. Lunch break at Silver Lake Resort. Departure to Golubac fortress, one of the best preserved medieval fortified cities in Serbia. It is located on a rocky slope, at the very entrance to Đerdap gorge, and its lowest part just out into the Danube. Photo stop. Further, on 25th kilometer downstream from Golubac, near antic locality Castrum Nova, Dobra village, a place of clean and unpolluted nature, can be reached by Iron Gate main road.

Here one can see many items from previous centuries: cradle, traditional costume, carpets, dishes and pottery, crude rugs… Departure to Lepenski Vir follows, a series of Mesolithic villages located on a high sandy terrace of the Danube River. In June 2011 a modernly equipped visitor’s centre was opened. Continuing of the tour along the Danube toward Donji Milanovac and visiting „Open Air Gallery“ on Đerdap Lake.

Dinner in a beautiful environment and gathering with the naive sculptor, the host. You will try specialties of Vlachs cuisine:  breaded nettle, Đerdap corn bread, goat cheese with dill, lamb and pork meat roasted on a stick…delicious. You will have a chance to prepare brandy (rakija) and enjoy in its flavor. Time at leisure on this beautiful eco-ethno complex, with amazing view of our strongest river – Danube River. Overnight.

 

 Day 3: Donji Milanovac – Majdanpek – Donji Milanovac (B,L,D) approx . 70 km

After breakfast, your local host will take you on one exciting hiking tour. The hiking trails of Đerdap do not require hiking equipment. The slopes ranging from 5 to 20 percent on these trails are easily negotiated. You will walk through path Colorado of Boljetin. We will take you around 10km by car, enjoying in intact nature. After driving, nice easy walk follows, approximately half an hour long. We shall follow a small river; see rocks’ layers from the earliest time.

Return to Donji Milanovac for lunch. After a short brake, we depart to Rajkova cave, a protected speleological location, which along with its surrounding represents a geo-park in eastern Serbia, in the vicinity of the town of Majdanpek. On our way to Donji Milanovac we shall see Valja Prerast (“Plain Natural Bridge”). Sightseeing tour and trip to Donji Milanovac. Dinner and overnight in Donji Milanovac.

 

Day 4: Donji Milanovac –Tekije –  Diana – Fetislam – Kladovo (B,L,D) approx. 135 km

Breakfast. Optional: boat ride to Tekije. We shall see the most beautifull part of Iron Gate with Tabula Traiana. Arrival to Kladovo. On our way to Kladovo, we shall make a stop to visit Power Plant. After that we shall visit also Diana Fortress, which represents the biggest and best preserved Roman Fortification /castrum/ on the Danube. Lunch break. Next on our way is Fetislam. The fortification is situated in Kladovo on the bank of Danube. The fortress was built in 1524 by the Ottomans and it had strategic importance during the Austro-Turkish conflicts. The Turkish garrison stayed up to 1867. Arrival in the 4* hotel on the Danube shore. Dinner and overnight at the hotel in Kladovo.

Day 5: Kladovo – Vratna Monastery – Rajačke and Rogljevske pimnice – Bor (B,L,D) approx. 190 km

Breakfast at the hotel. The first destination is Vratna monastery, located in the vicinity of the famous Vratna stone gates. The entire complex of Vratna, its village, bridges and the monastery is surrounded by rivers and forests representing one of the most significant attractions of Negotin area. After this we will go further to Negotin. About 10 kilometers south of Negotin, close to the village Mokranje, the river of Sikole has created a wonderful waterfall and a beautiful lake. Despite its modest size, this place called Cliffs of Mokranje, is a popular beach resort of surrounding villages and inhabitants of Negotin.

Next on our way is Rogljevske Pivnice, wine cellars in the village of Rogljevo, located on a hill north of the village of Rajac, built next to the vineyards. This settlement is between 80 and 110m above the sea level. After that we shall visit Rajačke Pimnice, a compound of wine cellars belonging to the village of Rajac, located 2 km to the west of the village, along the vineyards, on top of Beli Breg hill. The compound is densely clustered, built spontaneously, following the terrain. Lunch in household where you shall have opportunity taste traditional cuisine. Departure to Bor. Accommodation at the hotel, dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 6: Bor – Brestovac Spa – Prolom Spa (B,L,D) approx. 265 km 

Breakfast at the hotel. Sightseeing tour of Bor, mine and museum. Experience an adrenaline rush during the Bor mine tour, 400 meters underground through the “11th horizon” while getting familiar with the beauties of Eastern Serbia. This unique Bor mine holds the largest artificial prospect in Europe, with a terrace for beautiful panoramic view representing unusual sights of Serbia. We will take you to the Brestovac spa for lunch and sightseeing. Past volcanic activity and the complex geological composition of the ground led to the formation of thermal mineral springs. Departure to Prolom Spa, accommodation and dinner at the hotel. Overnight.

 

Day 7: Prolom Spa –  Đavolja varoš – Studenica Monastery (B,L,D) approx. 190 km

Departure for Đavolja Varoš, a peculiar rock formation, located in south Serbia on the Radan Mountain near Kuršumlija. It features 202 exotic formations described as earth pyramids or “towers”, as the locals refer to them. They are between 2 and 15 m tall and from 4 to 6 m wide at the base. These formations were created by strong erosion of the soil, which was scene of intense volcanic activity millions of years ago. Most of the towers have “caps” or “heads” of andesite, which protect them from further erosion. Lunch and depart toward Studenica monastery, built in the late 12th century, the largest and the richest of Serbia’s Orthodox monasteries. The road shall take us across Kopaonik Mountain, National Park and the most faous ski resort in Serbia. Arrival and dinner in the monastery. Overnight in monastery’s quarters.

 

Day 8: Studenica monastery– Mećavnik (B,L,D) approx. 170 km

After breakfast in the monastery, we you will visit the main church of Studenica, and monastery treasury.  Across the Golija Mountain, the first UNESCO registered biosphere reserve in Serbia, we go to ethno village Zlakuša, known for its production of ceramic. Above all, Zlakuša offers the creation of ceramic pots and artistic ceramics in the ancient way, on the manual wheel, and their baking in the open fair. Lunch in ethno house, typical village house, where guests will taste most delicious Serbian cuisine.

Departure to Mokra Gora train station. We shall take a ride in one of the most scenic train routes in Europe. After two unforgettable hours in the train, we go to Mećavnik, an ethno village, established by famous Serbian film director Emir Kusturica. It consists of wooden houses, precisely log huts, which preserved the authentic of this part of Serbia. Mećavnik has also a church, restaurant, souvenir shop, gallery, cinema “Underground”, national restaurant, weave workshop, and many other things that makes your stay unforgettable. Streets in this town are named after famous persons from culture, science, sport, Dinner at the hotel. All products that you can taste are homemade. Overnight.

 

 Day 9: Mećavnik – Belgrade (B,L,D) approx. 215 km

After breakfast we return to Belgrade. On our way to the north, we shall make a break in the biggest Serbian gorge between the mountains Ovčar and Kablar. Next stop will be in Topola and Oplenac, two beautiful spots in the heart of Serbia that serve as the resting place for Serbian kings of the Karađorđević Dynasty. Topola is abundant in vineyards, and therefore, wine tasting in Royal wine cellar is a must while visiting this charming town. Lunch in traditional restaurant, in a beautiful environment. Departure to Belgrade, dinner in Skadarlija, bohemian part of Belgrade. Ride to the train station. Departure by train art 22:00.
